Introduction
So, a bit about me, but not much, because I’m boring and this blog is about food, walking, foraging and drinking. I grew up in Brighton and spent the first 25 years of my life there. We moved out of Brighton thanks to the ridiculous rent and house prices (I sold a 2 bedroom 1st floor flat and bought a 3 bedroom semi-detached house with a massive garden). I now live in Hurstpierpoint, which is wonderful, but Brighton is my true home and one of the reasons Hurst is so good is because of its proximity. While I was in Brighton, playing in bands, going to gigs (as you do), my main hobby was probably going to the pub and that’s still a favourite past time. However in Hurst there wasn’t (and pretty much still isn’t) anyone I know to go to the pub with. I also seem to have a lot less money now that I have a car and a house and a child so popping down the local, which of course is a gastro pub that sells mediocre beer (compared to the many craft ale haunts in Brighton) at over £4 a pint, wasn’t really an option and I started finding new slightly safer and cheaper hobbies. I swapped my guitar for a spatula, the pub for big grassy fields and a glass or 6 in the pub to a glass of homemade booze at home.
Now to the blog. Why does this blog exist? Well I used to write a blog a while ago, but I wasn’t that happy with it really and I started falling behind on posts until eventually I just gave up. I felt I needed another crack at it. But mainly this is about all the amazing food and drink and gorgeous countryside all around us that amazingly I think a lot of people living in cities like Brighton are largely unaware of. I’m going to write about food that we can forage, producers that are a must visit, walks that show off the beauty of Sussex and the Downs and how to use some of that foraged and bought produce to make some amazing food and cheap booze. The purpose of this blog is to hopefully encourage a few people to appreciate a little more of what Sussex has to offer, and if you can’t be bothered to get out there, at least enjoy some pretty pictures and give me a shout next time you’re going to the pub.
